ABOUT THE ARTIST

Joan Lawson expresses her love of nature in her paintings. She finds inspiration in the natural beauty and light of the Texas Hill Country, as well as her travels in the United States and other countries. Her style ranges from realism to nonrepresentational, depending on how the subject renders itself at the time. She enjoys painting her beautiful surroundings, but also likes to express in abstract and figurative form her interpretation of dreams and visions.

Her SHE Is The New Millennium series is currently touring the U.S., and her The American West series has just returned from exhibitions in Paris, France. Her latest series, Spirit of the Land, is in an Edmond, Oklahoma, gallery.

Having painted for years in oils and watercolors, Joan now enjoys the flexibility of acrylics to achieve texture and depth in her work. She paints either on canvass or paper, using sponges to apply washes and textured layers. Additional texture is added by using a palette knife to build up the paint, or by collaging with papers, fibers, sand, or "found objects." A luminous quality is achieved by the use of pearlescent and metallic paints. Final details are added with a brush. She accomplishes a look of unique boldness, tempered with a quality of softness.

Joan paints and gives lessons in her Dream Catcher Art Studio located in the Texas Hill Country southwest of Austin. She has a BA in studio art from Oklahoma City University, and has studied painting with well-known artists in the U.S. and France. She is a member of the National Acrylic Painters Association, First Frontier Collage Society, Waterloo Watercolor Group in Austin, and Austin Visual Arts Assoc. She is also a founding member and officer of the Oak Hill Arts Association. She exhibits in Austin, San Antonio, Galveston, Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Paris, France, and conducts "Exploring Creativity Through Art" workshops in Texas and Oklahoma. Her paintings are in private and corporate collections in the U.S. and abroad. Her work can be seen in Austin at Laughing At the Sun Gallery, Friday Mountain Buffalo Show Gallery, and Dream Catcher Art Studio; in Wimberly and Galveston at Sable V Galleries; and in Edmond, Oklahoma, at A Different Twist Gallery.
